Mandrake Alraun in Coffin

A genuine Mandrake root Alruan, housed in a bespoke coffin box. The root is an example of the highly sought after Mandragora officinarum, naturally anthropomorphic with a head of branching forms – charmingly reminiscent, somewhat, of ‘Raggety’ the wood-troll of Nutwood Common from the Rupert stories. The root is intact and unaltered, save for the addition of black glass eyes. The Mandrake is, abiding by tradition, wrapped in a thick woven cloth of pure silk and rests upon a cloud-like bed of raw silk. The whole is housed within a bespoke coffin-box, hand crafted by Jane Cox from Oak. The book-matched lid is crafted from ancient bog oak, several millennia old, and fitted with a quatrefoil form, carved in oak By Gemma Gary. The base of the coffin is trimmed in bog oak.

Upon the underside of the lid is affixed a hand inked talisman of Dragon’s Blood ink upon goat skin created by Gemma Gary. Within its symbolism are exalted the virtues of the Mandrake root, incorporating sigils and signs of Earth, Fire, Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter and associated Angelic presences.

Traditionally, the Mandrake would be kept upon the hearth or mantlepiece, as a powerful household guardian spirit, there to exert a protective influence and draw into the household the blessings of prosperity and potency.

Mandrake Alraun in Coffin

Here presented is a coffin-housed root of Mandrake. The root is a rare, large example of the highly sought after Mandragora officinarum. The root is intact and unaltered, save for the addition of black glass eyes and the accentuation of an already extant ‘mouth’. Its bizarre and endearingly monstrous form is, abiding by tradition, wrapped in a thick woven cloth of pure silk and rests upon a cloud-like bed of raw silk. The whole is housed within a bespoke coffin-box, hand crafted by Jane Cox from the Saturnian Yew – fitting for its association with the virtues of Earth, protection, resurrection/rebirth and of the Underworld. The upper surface of the lid is adorned with a cross, hand carved by Gemma Gary from ancient bog Oak, and bearing the skull and cross-bones, sacred heart and stylised Mandrake plant terminals.
